Explosion Telemetry Case Study

The Instrumentel Explosion Metrology Kit was developed in conjunction with the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to directly measure blast parameters from the target of controlled blasts used to neutralise chemical and biological threats.

The system is being used to inform the design of explosive devices capable of delivering a targeted and metered explosion of sufficient potency to neutralise no more than the threat, requiring precise measurement of the conditions created by the threat defeat explosion.

Instrumentel’s Wireless Explosion Telemetry System, also known in the USA by the acronym Wireless Advanced Instrumentation System (WAIS) has been shown to offer the ability to measure both the surrounding environment (using traditional wired sensors) and uniquely to monitor directly  the epicenter of the blast using Instrumentel’s innovative wireless data acquisition tag, the Hardened XT01 Data Tag.

We describe here tests conducted in collaboration with the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) where the Instrumentel Explosion Metrology System was used to collect blast data from controlled explosions.
